"Seaward Sail"
Sculptural Glass
Completed 1992
This sailboat was a painstakingly slow process compared to most hot glass pieces I did. It was all done by forming an initial triangle shape...fat at the base and thinning toward the top. The boat shape was slowly formed by keeping the bottom of the triangle very hot and using metal paddles and tools to push or pull the glass into a boat shape. At the same time, the top part of the triangle...the sail - had to be kept cooler than the body so that it wouldn't stretch out of it's own developing shape. (The trick is to keep the sail cool enough not to move but not too cool that it cracks while working with it!)
