Untitled
Pencil Drawing
Completed 1996

This was the first drawing I ever attempted of a person. When I was in high school and first began to think of art as a career, my art teacher had us do self portraits. Somehow, I weaseled out of that project and proceeded to work on something else. For some reason, I was nervous about drawing people.

It seems easy to draw an object and have it be recognized and accepted as that object - even if it is drawn without the greatest of care. But in my mind, drawing people is a more personal experience...one in which it is more important to have the drawing look exactly the same as the subject. It seemed to me that if I drew a picture of someone and even the tiniest detail was off, the viewer would notice that something wasn't right about the drawing...it wasn't quite the person that I was attempting to capture.

So, I shied away from drawing people until many years later. Two years after college I tried my hand at it. I bit the bullet and jumped into this drawing with two fingers crossed and a stack of pencils. This drawing is the end result.

To my astonishment, I had so much fun with this drawing and felt so comfortable with it, that I just may try my hand at drawing a person again.
